PANGEA
DAY
A global event bringing the world together through
film.
Offical
Website
Why? In a world where people
are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict,
it's easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea
Day seeks to overcome that – to help people see themselves
in others – through the power of film.
Starting at 18:00 GMT on
May 10, 2008, locations in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles,
Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro will be linked for a live program
of powerful films, live music, and visionary speakers. The
entire program will be broadcast – in seven languages
– to millions of people worldwide through the internet,
television, and mobile phones.
The 24 short films to be
featured have been selected from an international competition
that generated more than 2,500 submissions from over one
hundred countries. The films were chosen based on their
ability to inspire, transform, and allow us see the world
through another person's eyes. The winning films will be
announced in late April.
The program will also include
a number of exceptional speakers and musical performers.
Queen Noor of Jordan, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, musician/activist
Bob Geldof, and Iranian rock phenom Hypernova are among
those taking part.

RETURN OF THE KEY WEST PICTURE SHOW
Over the past few months,
a handful of local film and video makers have been quietly
shooting, editing, and producing new short films in response
to the 1978 local classic, The Key West Picture Show. Now
thirty years old, the original film by B. J. Martin serves
as an inspiring overview of our island's past and a humorous
look at the unique cultural aspects of our Southernmost
community. After accepting the challenge put forth by The
Studios of Key West and the Key West Film Society late last
year, a diverse group of modern-day media artists are about
to give us time capsules of our own.
The Return of the Key West
PIcture Show project was designed around that notion, and
has been generously sponsored by the island's Margaritaville
Restaurant and Store. The public will have a chance to see
the new crop of locally-inspired films.
Tickets $9 (KWFS members $6)

KEY
WEST PICTURE SHOW
In 1977 Key West Florida
was in sleepy transition. The U.S. Navy was leaving after
generations of dominance, tourism was moderate and developers
had not yet cast a longing eye down the Overseas Highway.
It was still a backwater seaport dependent upon the Navy,
commercial fishing and other often questionable maritime
activities
In the summer of 1977 we
set out to capture the mood of the island on film. We roamed
Key West, interviewing locals and visitors—baked Cuban
bread until dawn, danced with the comparsas, caught lobster
with the fishermen and blessed the fleet, rode the Conch
Train, discussed art, architecture and island history. We
were entertained by classical music played on the conch
shell, and we witnessed Captain Tony’s philosophy
on sexdrive in the tropics. We filmed the coral reef with
a treasure diver. The result is a timeless glimpse of that
era in Key West, a parody of a 1950’s educational
travel film exploring the island with honesty and humor.
As lifetime resident Sara Russell says at the end of the
film “… honey, you won’t see it again!”
I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did making it!

Waterfront
Pictures Presents a Special Screening of:
EUGENE WALTER: LAST OF THE BOHEMIANS
Eugene Walter, 1921-March
29, 1998, was an American screenwriter, poet, short-story
author, actor, puppeteer, gourmet chef, cryptographer, translator,
editor, costume designer and well-known raconteur. A friend
once observed that Walter had lived a "pixilated wonderland
of a life."
Eugene Walter: Last of the
Bohemians documents the life and career of a writer, poet,
actor, artist and raconteur whose work celebrates the art
of living and personifies the culture of the coastal South.
Living in Paris and Rome, Walter (1921-1998) lent his unique
personality and wide-ranging talent to a number of different
endeavors, many of them at the heart of the postwar artistic
renaissance in Europe -- winning numerous awards for his
poetry and fiction, helping start the Paris Review, working
with and acting in the films of Federico Fellini and other
Italian directors, editing the polylingual literary magazine
Botteghe Oscure and meeting and entertaining many of the
most famous writers and cultural figures of his time.
